A Set of Canopic Jars of Ancient Egypt
£23.99

Canopic jars were used in Ancient Egypt from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period. The purpose of canopic jars was to store internal organs of the deceased for them to be used again in the afterlife. Today canopic jars have become a novelty item and are generally used as trinket boxes.

From left to right are: Duamutef, the jackal god of the East. This jar used to contain the stomach and it was protected by the goddess Neith - Imseti, the human-form god of the South. It contained the liver and was protected by the winged goddess Isis - Hapi, the baboon god of the North. This jar used to contain the lungs of the deceased and was protected by the goddess Nephthys - Qebehsenuef, the falcon god of the West. This canopic jar contained the gut and was protected by the goddess Selkit.

This set is finished in antiqued gold colour, the heads come off to reveal a small storage compartment. Each statue is approximately 4-1/4" high.
