![]() Terracotta Warriors Museum: The terracotta army is one of the greatest wonders of the world. Well into the 20th century nobody knew about its existence. It was the year of 1974 when Chinese farmers discovered terracotta warriors by accident at Xian. People were digging a well and to their surprise tunnelled into a hidden cavity containing 6,000 life-size terracotta warrior figures. Excavation begun in 1976 to reveal more pits filled with statues and valuable artefacts. During the next decades excavations have continued at Xian and it is believed that many thousands of statues remain to be recovered. It is sometimes called the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World (the Seven wonders being Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Maussollos, Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria). You can see that Terracotta Warriors really fit into the list of those tremendous assets of ancient cultures.
Terracotta warriors were made by ancient Chinese craftsmen. They represent a great value in researching the life in ancient China as the statues were made to accurately depict the guards of the Emperor Quin Shi Huang Di. Their attire and armour tells us much about the military power of China 2,200 years ago. Terracotta is a type of ceramic, clay. Objects made of natural terracotta boast of their natural, earthy colour. Terracotta as a material is used for pottery and sculptural art. Nowadays tiles, bricks and shingles made of terracotta are proving to be popular. |
